From misconduct claims to data breaches, law firms can face any number of potentially damaging media inquiries. Our panel will discuss the issues and strategies to navigate crises and mitigate risk.

Eric Miller serves as Nossaman’s Communications Director and handles all aspects of media relations and media training.  Additionally, he is responsible for credentialing efforts across the Firm and for overseeing media-related content for the Firm’s internal and external communication channels.

He has been recognized by the Legal Marketing Association (LMA) for his public relations efforts—receiving a “Your Honor” award in California—and has spoken about public relations best practices at LMA events.

Prior to joining Nossaman, Mr. Miller worked in Public Relations for an AmLaw 50 law firm and a Fortune 500 company.

Pearl J. Piatt, Chief Communications Officer, Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP

Pearl Piatt is the Chief Communications Officer for Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP, where she has directed firmwide media relations since 2004. She and her team are responsible for securing media opportunities for the firm, responding to press inquiries, advising on crisis communications strategies, and providing media expertise and training.  Her team also handles industry recognition and accolades, and she has played a key role in helping Gibson Dunn win The American Lawyer Litigation Department of the Year for a record three times.

Prior to her tenure at Gibson Dunn, Pearl served as Global Public Relations Manager for Latham & Watkins LLP from 2000 to 2004, where she was responsible for media relations and crisis communications firmwide. From 1996 to 2000, she served as an editor and reporter for the Daily Journal Corp.  As an editor, she supervised 11 staff writers and was responsible for the content and production for California Law Business, a weekly supplement to the Los Angeles Daily Journal on the business of law, and Cyber Esq., a quarterly glossy-cover magazine on technology and the law.  She also served for three years as a reporter covering large law firms for California Law Business and the Los Angeles Daily Journal.

She received her law degree cum laude from the University of Puget Sound School of Law in 1994. She was a summer intern with the Northwest Women’s Law Center in 1993 and Evergreen Legal Services in 1992.  She received the Washington State Trial Lawyers Association Public Service Award in 1994.

Charlie Sipkins, Partner, Finsbury

Charlie Sipkins, a founding partner in Finsbury’s Los Angeles office, is a trusted advisor to executives and boards of Fortune 500 companies facing high-stakes, complex special situations, financial transactions, litigation and other strategic communications challenges.  As a fierce advocate on his clients’ behalf, Charlie understands that communications can profoundly and positively impact an organization’s strategic business objectives.  Some of Charlie’s current and former clients include: Adobe, USC, Lionsgate, Ring, Volkswagen, Caruso, Aecom, PIMCO, DFJ and 21st Century Fox/Newscorp. Prior to joining Finsbury, Charlie served as EVP and Chief Communications Officer of Sony Pictures Entertainment.  He launched the Los Angeles office of Sard Verbinnen and has held positions at the Abernathy MacGregor Group and other communications firms.  Charlie began his career as a legislative assistant for Representative Martin Olav Sabo on the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Appropriations.  He earned a B.A. in political science from Syracuse University.

A communications professional with enviable contacts and reach, Cheryl Bame is widely recognized for her innovative work with law firms, professional services firms, financial and real estate companies as well as industry trade groups. After a decade in the broadcast news business, Cheryl has spent the last 18 years implementing communications programs that involve media relations, social media, networking and speaking engagements and other professional reputations strategies. In 2015, Cheryl was asked by the International Board of Directors of the Legal Marketing Association to launch the firms Public Relations Special Interest Group to advance the public relations profession for the legal industry. A frequent speaker and blogger, Cheryl has a passion for her craft and her clients' successes.

Any cancellations made before January 10, 2019 will be fully refunded. All cancellations made after that date will be billed in full. Registrations may be transferred, however price differences between member and non-members will be billed accordingly.
