Debra Baker is a journalist turned lawyer focused on helping law firms achieve triple bottom line success metrics around profits, people and purpose.
With more than 25 years of experience working in the legal market, she works with law firm leaders, teams and individual lawyers to create conditions to enable growth and change. The goal: to build better law businesses, better understand and respond to client needs and make the practice of law more enjoyable and fulfilling.
Prior to joining her colleagues from Akina to become part of GrowthPlay’s Professional Services division, Debra founded Law Leaders Lab, where she worked with lawyers on innovation initiatives to help them better create, deliver and community value to clients. She also has served in executive-level marketing and business development positions for both a Global 100 law firm and a legal technology company. She also was an award-winning journalist for the ABA Journal, where she covered law practice management and business ethics.
She is author to a first-of-its kind research study, Overcoming the Barriers to Law Innovation, which levereged talent analytics to define the capacities required to drive change initiatives, promote collaboration and sell change.
She serves on the board of directors for the Northwestern Law School Center for Practice Engagement & Innovation and is a frequent speaker on the topic of law innovation and growth effectiveness, including the 2018 Summit on Legal Innovation & Disruption (Do you have what it takes to survive in the Innovation Economy?), LMA Southwest (Great Law & Innovation: An Actionable Roadmap), LMA West (Future Casting the Role of Lead Marketer) and the Chicago, the Midwest Legal Technology Tech Show (Big Data and the Law) and Law Exchange International (5 Models of Innovation). She recently co-authored an ABA Journal Legal Rebels article, “From Good Law to Great Law.”
Debra is based in San Diego and is licensed to practice law in Illinois.
