Bill is a Professor of Law at Indiana University Maurer School of Law, where he holds the Stephen F. Burns Chair on the Legal Profession. He also editor of Legal Evolution, an online publication that chronicles successful innovation within the legal industry. Bill’s research focuses on the empirical analysis of the legal profession and legal education. In addition to leading law journals, his articles and essays frequently appear in The American Lawyer, The ABA Journal, and The National Law Journal. Some of Bill's industry recognition includes:
- ABA Journal’s 2009 inaugural class of "Legal Rebels"
- National Law Journal’s 100 most influential lawyers in America;
- National Jurist’s most influential person in legal education.
Bill has been a member of Indiana University Maurer School of Law faculty since 2003. In 2010, he co-founded Lawyer Metrics, an applied research company that helps lawyers and law firms use data to make better operational and strategic decisions. Lawyer Metrics was acquired by AccessLex Institute in 2015. In 2017, Bill founded Legal Evolution, an online publication that chronicles successful innovation within the legal industry.
