This month, the LMA West Region is excited to feature Carlene Richardson, the Business Development Manager at Stoel Rives LLP! Carlene is a member of the Portland city group that is part of the LMA Northwest local group. Read more about Carlene to find out how she manages 6 different practice groups, what advice she would offer other legal marketers, and what daredevil things she enjoys doing outside of work!
How did you get started in the legal marketing industry?
I had no idea there was such a thing as legal marketing until I ran across a job posting for a boutique firm. I thought it would be a good way to combine my marketing and business skills with my interest in the legal industry. Working for that boutique firm was a good learning experience and I’ve found something I really love doing.
What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
Never run out of food at an event. Coming in at a close second is to not take things personally. When I entered the world of legal marketing there was an adjustment period to learn just how different things work in this environment. I take pride in my work product and it was difficult the first time something came back with the dreaded red marks all over it. I still take pride in my work product but know that nothing is ever “perfect” when working with attorneys.
What projects are you excited about currently?
Over the past several years I’ve taken on the role of efficiency expert and am currently working on ways to improve key processes within our department. It’s a great feeling when I can bring a group together and work out solutions that make everyone’s job a little easier and free up time for larger projects.
What is one of the biggest challenges you face, and how do you tackle it?
I manage six groups and it is often challenging to keep up with executing on the group plans as well as finding time to meet with individual attorneys to work on their personal business development plans. Staying organized and utilizing tools like Outlook and OneNote have helped. Plus, I work with a talented team who is always there to help out when needed.
What is your favorite part about being a member of LMA?
Through LMA I have had the chance to meet so many wonderful people. I remember when I first joined and being struck by how supportive and helpful members were to each other. Not every industry enjoys that kind of comradery and feel lucky to have found
What are your favorite things to do outside of work?
I love spending time with my family: cheering on my boys at their baseball and basketball games, kayaking, and going to the movies. I am hoping to take up a new hobby and try out marimba classes.
What would people be most surprised to learn about you?
I have an even tempered low-key personality so I think people would be surprised to find there is a side of me that appreciates a good adrenaline rush. I enjoy riding roller coasters, have hurled my body off a bridge with only a bungee cord attached to me, and tested my will by walking over a bed of hot coals in bare feet.
