Linda was the ideal mentee from the get-go. She came to this process with an incredibly clear vision of what she wanted to accomplish professionally. In our initial conversation, she was able to articulate her goals and - most importantly - how I could help her achieve them. I cannot overstate how helpful that was in allowing me to immediately provide value. In fact, that very day at the LMASE Annual Conference, I introduced her to one of my mentors in the industry! Over the last two years, she has remained steadfast in those goals. We live 250 miles apart, but distance has not deterred us. For about a year and a half, we talked on the phone at least once a month. Sometimes our calls lasted 10 minutes; other times they lasted an hour. But every call was productive. I agree with Linda that the keys to success are consistent communication, transparency about mentoring goals, professional respect, kindness, humility and a mutual desire for excellence and success.

Erin and I began our mentor-mentee relationship in the fall of 2015 in conjunction with the LMASE Annual Conference in Atlanta. The moment I spotted this petite pregnant woman with the million dollar smile in the lobby of the Four Seasons hotel I knew that we would hit it off. My primary goals in requesting a mentor was to increase my knowledge of the legal marketing field and grow professionally with the help of an experienced legal marketer/BD professional. Erin embraced my goals with enthusiasm and a commitment to help me achieve them. Beginning in 2015 and throughout 2016, Erin and I held standing check-in meetings at least once a month during which she checked on my progress towards meeting my goals and answered a million questions about industry terminology and concepts I did not understand. Erin continues to make herself available to me whenever I need her, providing feedback, coaching and support in the same friendly, patient and nonjudgmental manner that I first witnessed during our initial encounter at the Four Seasons. Consistent communication, transparency about mentoring goals, professional respect, kindness, humility and a mutual desire for excellence and success have been the keys to success for our mentoring relationship.
