LMA's Body of Knowledge (BoK) is a foundational resource that defines the core skills necessary for legal marketers to succeed. It outlines the essential and accepted domains, competencies and associated skill sets within the legal marketing profession at every level. As such, legal marketers can use it in a variety of ways to benefit their own professional development — or that of their teams. (The BoK is free to LMA members, and can be accessed here.)
We asked LMA members to share how they're utilizing the BoK at their firms. Here's how some of them are putting this great resource to use:
“We wanted to build our team of legal marketers without compromising on the credibility of a candidate, and found the BoK to be a powerful suite of tools when crafting an on-point job description. Consequently, the BoK exponentially helped identify appropriate candidates for specific positions, as well as clarified the position and industry-related requirements and expectations for the candidate, thus making it a smooth and confusion-free process for all involved.” — Christine N. Mitchell, Business Development Executive, Foley & Lardner LLP (Foley Gardere)
“I have found the LMA Body of Knowledge an incredible resource, as it provides me with a checklist of various skills and categories of knowledge that I can use to objectively assess my professional growth and that of my team members. I’m able to use this resource to assess my own strengths and areas where I need to grow. The BoK is often referred to as a ‘roadmap to professional development at every level of a career,’ and I’ve found that to be true. It’s apparent that a lot of time and effort was invested by leaders in our profession to develop the BoK, and I encourage fellow LMA members to explore its benefits.” — Tom Helm, Director of Practice Development, Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner LLP
“The BoK is an invaluable resource to firms, professionals and business partners. As a company we use the Competency Analysis Tools (CATs) to help us evaluate our team’s skills and competencies and plan for individual growth opportunities as our employees set goals for the coming year. We love the quick and easy competency reviews, as they help us to develop job descriptions, as well as identify areas that we can better service our clients through expanded offerings. We also greatly appreciate that the LMA is proactively keeping this resource up-to-date with the ever-changing needs of our profession, so we can always be ahead of what our clients need” — Morgan MacLeod, Co-Owner, Cubicle Fugitive Inc.
