On May 17, the Philadelphia Local Group held its inaugural Future Leaders Boot Camp at White and Williams LLP. Robyn Addis, 2018 Philadelphia LSC Chair and Emilie Klenk, Future Leaders SIG Chair welcomed future leaders from across the region and at various stages in their careers.
The half day conference included four different presentations: (1) a panel discussion on navigating your own career; (2) an attorney/marketer interview that focused a day in the life an attorney; (3) a law firm economics presentation; and (4) an interactive session on networking skills.
Skills for Success: Navigating Your Career Path in Legal Marketing – Moderated by Robyn Addis, Director of Marketing at Ballard Spahr LLP; presenters included Kevin Bosshardt, Director of Marketing Operations at Saul Ewing Arnstein & Lehr; Leslie Gross, Director of Communications at Saul Ewing Arnstein & Lehr; and Kristen Held, Business Development Manager at Ballard Spahr LLP.
The panel discussed their careers paths and how the choices they made over the years enabled them to advance to the position and job title they hold today. This discussion provided the audience with strategic advice on how to manage the challenges they will face throughout each stage of their careers.
Think Like an Attorney: A Day in the Life – Alexis Madden, Manager of Marketing and Business Development at Conrad O’Brien, interviewed Patricia Hamill, Partner at Conrad O’Brien, to find out what it would be like to walk in the shoes of a lawyer who we market. The audience received an insightful, first-hand breakdown of what attorneys—partners in particular—tackle on a daily basis, learning best practices on how to develop and leverage the attorney/legal marketer relationship to best serve the firm’s external clients within each practice area. It’s always important to keep in mind that the lawyers are the clients of legal marketers.
Demystifying Law Firm Economics – Kathleen Garrity, Chief Operating Officer at Cohen Seglias Pallas Greenhall & Furman PC, gave a very informative presentation on law firm economics, educating the group on several firm acronyms including PPP (profit per partner) and how LLPs (limited liability partnerships) differ from PCs (professional corporations).
How to Establish a Strong Network and Grow Your Career with Intention – Jennifer Lynn Robinson, CEO of Purposeful Networking (literally!) walked the audience through best practices in networking. Future leaders had the opportunity to meet one another around the room, introducing themselves to other members. Immediately following this presentation, attendees had the opportunity to test their new skills at the Philly Spring Social immediately following the boot camp.
Attendees left the boot camp armed with a wealth of new information and best practices that they could utilize in a typical “day in their life” and apply to their careers as well.
