José E. V. Cunningham, former Chief Marketing and Business Development Officer at Nixon Peabody LLP, is one of two members honored recently at the annual LMA Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference in Washington, D.C., on November 6, 2019. José received the prestigious “Hall of Fame” award.
José has been part of the legal marketing community nationally and in the Mid-Atlantic region for several years. He has decades of legal marketing experience and has a very strong reputation for building and nurturing high-performance marketing and business development teams. He never turns down an opportunity to meet with someone who wants to get together for coffee to discuss career development or industry best practices. Jacqueline Madarang, Associate Director of Marketing Technology at Blank Rome LLP, notes that, “José is more than willing to talk with junior marketers on career development and he truly lives by the power of mentorship by informally mentoring dozens of industry colleagues.”
José is a true leader and has been chairman, speaker or moderator for at least 40 legal marketing industry conferences since 2003. He co-chaired the 2014 LMA Annual Conference in Orlando, FL, and has published tons of thought leadership content in our industry. Most recently, he co-chaired a task force that gave a voice and purpose to constituents in our chosen profession who are eager to effect change by empowering and equipping LMA to build diverse and inclusive teams. The task force gave way to the establishment of the LMA Committee and the Special Interest Group on Diversity & Inclusion (D&I). José is now serving in his third year as co-chair of the Committee on D&I.
Outside of his significant contributions to LMA and the legal marketing industry, until recently José worked as Chief Marketing and Business Development Officer at Nixon Peabody LLP. In that role, José led an international team of colleagues responsible for executing the firm’s strategic priorities. He kept the team focused on the important role marketing and business development plays in uncovering significant domestic and global opportunities to better serve Nixon Peabody’s clients, achieving differentiation, and unlocking additional value.
Prior to coming on board at Nixon Peabody, José served in the CMO roles at Shaw Pittman LLP and Crowell and Moring LLP. Before entering the legal marketing field, José worked in client services, marketing, and sales roles for several large corporations.
When asked how it feels to be selected as a YHA hall of fame winner, José said, “Over the past 18 years my industry colleagues and peers have been right at my side, helping me advance in my chosen profession. With that kind of support it’s been easy for me to want to give back and contribute to LMA. I encourage everyone to get involved at the local chapter or national level. I have been emboldened in my passion for mentoring and helping to make progress in diversity & inclusion in our association by so many LMA members. I am grateful to them and to the Mid-Atlantic Region for the Hall of Fame award.”
