1. How did you start working in the legal industry?

I started my "professional career" in Sales and Marketing in the Insurance Industry - Employee Benefits, then was asked to be the first Director of Marketing for a regional accounting firm, (I did not even know what the job entailed, but I figured it out!) and then moved to one of the Big 6 accounting firms to be their Regional Director of Sales. I was then recruited to a law firm to be their Director of Marketing. The secret is that all these organizations have the same issues when it comes to marketing and business development, but the lawyers are more fun to work with!

2. What advice would you offer to someone new to the industry?

Learn as much as you can from your peers like those in LMA, watch what others are doing in other industries as you might be able to apply those ideas to your firm, work hard, stay out of the politics and keep a sense of humor. And remember - it is not about you.

3. Why did you join LMA and is it the same reason you are still a member?

I had Chaired the national Board of The Association for Accounting Marketing (AAM) and it had proved to be a very helpful resource. I also met some wonderful people. When I moved over to my first law firm, I wanted to get involved in a similar organization and that was LMA. I applied for membership and then was voted on to the Board and eventually Chaired the LMA national (now international) board. (To tell you how long ago this was, we launched the first Chapter!) I Chaired/Co-chaired two of the annual conferences and have spoken at numerous programs over the years. I always learn something new at the LMA conferences/programs and have met many of the members who are friends for life!

4. What would people be most surprised to learn about you?

I love to fish! Althought I have gone ocean fishing on a few ocassions and even caught a marlin in Cabo as big as me, I prefer lake or stream fishing. My mom and dad were avid fisherman and many of our vacations when I was a kid were camping trips where we would get up early and try our luck in the lake or stream. And yes, I do bait my own hook!

5. What is your favorite thing to do when you are not at work?

I am a runner. If I have a big presentation to give and I get in a run beforehand, I know it will go well. It calms me down and allows me to collect my thoughts. I am also a spinner and a gym rat. I really love all sports.
