Core Marketing Skills Development Bootcamp

The Annual LMA Marketing Skills Bootcamp provides you with a unique opportunity to sharpen your skills and gain some news ones in an interactive and hands-on program. This Bootcamp is ideal for those working in law firm marketing departments, especially junior and mid-level marketers, anyone working in business development, including marketing-savvy lawyers and solo practitioners. Attendees will be split into four smaller groups and will cycle through these four discussions.

1. “Law 101” – Alexander Holburn Associate, Ryan Howe

In this session, Ryan Howe will give you the chance to learn about law firm basics in a comfortable, non-threatening environment. Ryan will answer those questions you have always wanted to ask your lawyers, and will provide you with invaluable insight into the deadlines and time constraints that lawyers manage. Examples of topics he will cover include common legal terminology, the day-to-day life of a lawyer, and the typical associate's career path.

2. “Legal Marketing Survival Guide” - Lynn Foley

Are you interested in learning about how the different personalities and the politics inherent in law firms will affect your work? Have you ever wondered about the law firm management structure and the different layers at work behind each major decision? In this presentation, Lynn Foley will outline some law firm do's and dont's, provide case studies of real-life challenging experiences and guidance on how these conflicts can be resolved, and will share some truths about law firms that you likely haven't heard before.

3. “Effective Networking for Marketing Professionals” – Allison Wolf

Networking remains an important way for lawyers and legal professionals to retain their clients and gain new ones, and increasingly they are looking to marketing professionals for guidance on how they can network more effectively . This presentation will look at networking for different personality types, traditional vs. social media networking tactics and the generational differences that underlie these approaches, and will provide a step-by-step plan for effective networking when a lawyer is attending a conference or event.

4. “Fall Check-Up: Keeping Track of Your Practice Group Business Plans” – Susan VanDyke

Fall is the perfect time to take stock of your practice group plans and evaluate what’s working and what's not. This portion of the bootcamp will look at best practices and steps for creating a successful practice group plan, the 5 most common pitfalls when creating a plan and methods to tie in ROI measurement and budget monitoring.

About the Speakers

Lynn Foley is a Partner and Co-Founder of fSquared Marketing a legal and professional services marketing consulting firm.  She is a client relationship management and marketing veteran with 19 years of expertise in business development, client management, digital strategy and execution, brand visibility and leading highly effective teams in complex organizations. She has held senior roles in market leading companies including JPMorgan Chase, PricewaterhouseCoopers, White & Case LLP and Bull, Housser & Tupper LLP.

She is a member of the Board of Directors of the Legal Marketing Association, Vancouver Chapter and frequently presents in Canada and the United States on topics associated with legal marketing, business development and digital strategy.

Ryan N. Howe was called to the British Columbia Bar in 2012 and is an Associate with Alexander Holburn Beaudin + Lang LLP’s Business Law Group. He is a member of AHBL’s Wealth Preservation + Estate Litigation, Corporate Commercial, and Commercial Real Estate practice groups. Prior to joining AHBL, Ryan owned a film company in Ontario and moonlighted as a video game tester and reviewer. As a result of his background, Ryan is particularly interested in the way technology affects and alters the law, particularly the practice of law.

Ryan is passionate about business development and is a member of a number of both formal and informal business development associations.

Allison Wolf is a certified executive coach and President of Shift Works Strategic Inc. a company focused on using the practice of coaching to enhance the performance and success of lawyers. She works with clients, including indivudual lawyers and law firms, in Canada from coast-to-coast, and also with clients from the United States and Australia.  Her work is focused on three main areas: practice management, business development, and leadership. Allison is a recognized expert in coaching and legal marketing and business development. She is the author of a regular practice management column for the on-line legal magazine Slaw.ca and maintains her own blog “thelawyercoach.com”.  Allison is a Past-President of the LMA Vancouver Chapter.

Susan Van Dyke's experience in marketing and communications in the services sector began in 1991 and has focused on the demanding legal services field since 1995. She helps improve the profile of firms and lawyers, and manages communications projects that involve mergers, branding, media relations, advertising and websites. She also advises on the development and execution of business development plans. Prior to starting her own business, Susan was the senior marketing professional with two mid-sized law firms and in the Vancouver office of a national firm.

Susan served two terms as president of the Legal Marketing Association’s Vancouver Chapter and served as the only Canadian on its international board in 2010.  She is a columnist for the Canadian Bar Association’s online resource, PracticeLink, and is regularly interviewed on legal management subjects.
