On March 14, the Capital Chapter’s Future Leaders SIG held a brownbag luncheon titled “Meet the Board,” which introduced nearly 30 attendees to the new 2013 LMA Capital Chapter Board, including Marguerite Downey of Adduci, Mastriani & Schaumberg, Ezra Crawford of BuckleySandler, Faith Brinkley of Bryan Cave, Laurie Paul of Steptoe & Johnson, Kiara Hughes of Miles & Stockbridge P.C., Anne Core of Lerch Early & Brewer, Samantha McKenna of ON24, and Liz gooch of Arent Fox.
Moderated by Andy Stief of Morrison & Foerster, the panel shared their personal insights into the world of legal marketing, covering a wide range of topics that included: committee involvement, time commitment and management, getting buy-in from the firm to support LMA involvement, and top tips for new legal marketers, which are highlighted below:
a. Developing relationships is key for your professional growth as well as for having a resource of folks to bounce ideas off of.
2. Be the expert
a. Read everything you can and learn about your job. You have to be more knowledgeable about your specific area (events, PR, etc) than your attorneys.
3. Challenge Attorneys
a. They may be smart, but they don’t have all the answers and they want to hear opinions and guidance from professionals like you, even if it differs from their initial thoughts.
4. Be Curious
a. Expand your knowledge beyond the scope of your existing job. Not doing enough writing, PR, event planning, etc? Find someone who is and learn from them, or join and LMA committee that focuses on that skill.
5. Let attorneys know you care
a. Pay attention to their clients, their pain points, and their interests. Send them information they might not already know about (client mentioned in news, suggestions to improve a process, etc.)
6. Don’t sweat the small stuff
7. Track your success
8. Associates are a great resource to learn more about your practice…utilize them
