Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability
in the Legal Industry

Moving from Transactional to Transformational

Thursday, May 23 | 11:45 AM - 1:00 PM

Have you noticed the increased focus on Social Responsibility and Sustainability RFP questions coming from your clients and prospects? Do those questions even apply to law firms? After all, we are not dumping manufacturing waste into the ocean nor spewing metric tonnes of waste from smokestacks.

Yes, these questions apply to law firms. As an increasing number of companies are signing the United Nations Global Compact, they are committing to making progress toward the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) – which have a target date of 2030. With fewer than 12 years remaining, there is much work to be done.

One of the UNSDGs is #17 – Partnerships for the Goals. This goal encourages partnerships of all kinds, and includes making efforts to ensure your vendors and supply chain companies are also working toward making progress toward the goals. This includes law firms and other professional service providers.

Given this trend, replying to RFP questions with just your ProBono program or your Diversity & Inclusion initiatives will not be sufficient. Are you at risk of losing a client or a prospective client due to your inability to answer these questions?

This session will include examples of what to expect, how to prepare, how to understand the bigger CSR and Sustainability movement, and how to position your firm to be ready – or better yet – be a leader in this space. Case studies of firms doing it well – in a truly transformational fashion – will also be shared.

Pamela ConePamela Cone
VP, Global Social Responsibility Officer | Milliman
Founder & CEO | Amity Advisory

Pam joined Milliman in 2003 and served as the Chief Marketing Officer for 15 years. In 2018, Pam turned her attention to serving as the firm’s Global Social Responsibility Officer. Milliman is the largest privately held actuarial consulting firm in the world and has been embracing its role in “giving back” to society since its inception in 1947, but has only recently begun tracking, measuring and setting its strategic goals to reflect its mission of “protecting the health and financial well-being of people everywhere.”

Prior to joining Milliman, Pam spent 12 years with Davis Wright Tremaine LLP, where she served as director of client services and development. Prior to DWT, Pam served two other law firms in marketing and communications roles.

In addition to her role at Milliman, she has launched a CSR & Sustainability Consulting firm called Amity Advisory, which focuses on helping professional service firms assess, evaluate and build social impact and sustainability programs – moving from transactional “random acts of kindness” to robust transformational, collaborative programs.
