We are gearing up for the 2019 LMA Northeast Conference on November 14-15 in New York. This year, the LMA Northeast Region is offering junior marketers the chance to learn from industry veterans at the LMANext/Future Leaders Pre-Conference Boot Camp on Thursday, November 14.
Jennifer Johnson Scalzi, CEO of Calibrate Legal, Inc. and secretary to the LMA International Board of Directors, will lead us through the half-day boot camp as both program chair and speaker. She will kick off the event with a “Historical Overview of the Law Firm Industry” from 1:30 - 2:00 pm. Read on to find out more about this exciting opportunity to sharpen your industry knowledge and learn from some of the best in the business.
Tell us more about the LMANext/Future Leaders Boot Camp.
The Boot Camp is designed to give a holistic view into how law firms survive and thrive through various lenses including understanding how the industry was shaped through history, today’s business imperatives and what may impact law firm viability in the not-so-distant future. We have shaped the programs to provide a forum for deep dive discussions on a few topics with an open concept for Q&A with some highly regarded industry experts.
What can attendees expect to get out of this program?
Attendees will walk away with a rich understanding of the levers that are pulled to make law firms successful and how they can be an integral part of shaping the future of the business of law.
Can you share one tidbit of law firm history that has helped you better understand how firms should approach today’s hypercompetitive legal marketplace?
For anyone that is dedicated to understanding the industry, I highly recommend a booked called “The Future of the Professions” which provides incredible historical context for the professionals on the whole (doctors, lawyers, actuaries, clergy) and the impact they’ve made on the world. The authors make some compelling predictions for how the industry will be impacted by AI and other external factors that, unfortunately, many law firms are just not grasping as reality. Here is a link to my book review. In the bootcamp we are going to walk through the chronological history of the industry and discuss some factors which make law firms a “unique” place to work!
Your firm strongly advocates for all law firm marketing and BD teams to become Revenue Enablers™. What is one thing junior marketers can do right now to position themselves to support sustainable revenue growth at their firms?
Non-fee earners in law firms are essential to the ecosystem and the onus is on us to ensure that the value we bring is being realized and understood by firm leadership. Law firms are opaque environments so I recommend asking questions so that you can try and understand the business of the firm. I will provide a full listing of the questions you should be asking at the boot camp for all attendees (as well as some other important takeaways). Must be present to receive!
What are you most looking forward to about the LMANE19 conference?
In addition to the overall networking, I am looking forward to attending sessions to hear from those who are in the trenches making a difference in law firms so that I can remain connected to the heartbeat of the industry. I am also a fan of James Kane who I’ve heard speak a couple times (and sat next to on a flight!), and I always come away energized afterwards. Did you know that he customizes his speeches for every audience – when you hear him at the conference it won’t be canned. Good stuff!
