On what was one of the hottest days of the summer, members of LMA Northeast met on a July afternoon for the 2017 Future Leaders Boot Camp, hosted at Fish & Richardson’s Boston office.
The theme of the program focused on critical skills for success, and featured discussions and interactive sessions led by former future leaders, managers and directors from firms of all sizes. The event had an impressive turnout, with LMA members from across the region in attendance. A number of participants attended the Boot Camp program for the first time.
The 2017Future Leaders Boot Camp topics and speakers included the following programs:

Offering diverse perspectives from both small and large firms, the panelists provided insights on a variety of topics, including what advice they would give to their younger self, how to recover from a mistake and how a future leader can find their niche in the changing world of legal marketing. Key takeaways included asking the right questions, taking ownership of mistakes and collaboration.
- Preparing for the Next Era of Business Development and Marketing, led by Chris Newman of McDermott Will & Emery. Chris provided an in-depth look at the next generation of business developers and marketers in the legal industry and the areas they will need to focus on to succeed. He discussed trends, including greater levels of specialization, better client experiences, storytelling and collaboration. He also touched upon advancements in technology, with firms emphasizing better data and analytics, artificial intelligence, better sales tools and defined performance metrics.
- Sticky Situations – Problem Solving in the Real World, led by Future Leaders SIG Co-Chairs Jahna Barbar of Seyfarth Shaw and Ashley Gibbs of Foundation Software Group, and Boot Camp Co-Chair, Kimberly McLaughlin of WilmerHale. During this interactive exercise, the group was broken up into five teams, and each team was given a real-world problem in the life of a legal marketer to review. Teams were then asked to develop solutions to present to the full group.
- Establishing a Network and Growing Your Career with Intention, presented by Jennifer Johnson Scalzi of Calibrate Legal and Savannah Rose Alden of WilmerHale. Jennifer and Savannah presented on networking, including how to set goals and take networking to the next level.
