How did you get started in the legal marketing industry?

I responded to an ad in the newspaper for a marketing coordinator at Burnham Brown. It was a new position for the firm and I remember the enthusiasm and excitement of the attorneys for finally having a full-time marketing person on-board. Accepting their job offer and taking on the challenge of a new industry was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

What aspect of legal marketing/business development are you most passionate about?

Facilitating the connection between business development and diversity/inclusion initiatives is definitely something I feel very strongly about. Many clients are requesting, if not requiring diversity from their outside counsel. As a result - firms strive to recruit and retain attorneys to meet this expectation. Creating a partnership between business development teams and diversity committees is highly effective in the development of pitches, RFP responses, promotional materials, and sponsorships. This type of collaboration also has the ability to foster awareness and open-communication across firms. I’ve been very fortunate to experience first-hand the tangible and rewarding results of such efforts.

What advice would you give to someone new to law firm business development?

Get to know all your internal clients, learn their personalities, work styles, and preferred methods of communication. Don’t be afraid to listen, observe, and ask questions. Finally, trust yourself and your instincts.

What are your favorite things to do outside of work?

I enjoy hiking and running on the open-space trails near my home. I also enjoy gardening.

What would people be most surprised to learn about you?

I am a huge fan of Ancient Roman history and am teaching myself classical Latin.
