Pre-Conference Program: Breakthroughs in PR, Content and Communications
Why did you submit to present at the 2019 LMA Annual Conference?
Learning how to tell compelling true stories is not only a great way to entertain friends and family, it’s the best way to engage, inform and persuade anybody about anything.
I fell in love with storytelling listening to The Moth Radio Hour on NPR four years ago. Then when I started telling my own stories, it dawned on me that storytelling could and should be an integral part of any organization’s communications playbook. I’ve used storytelling to help a law firm partner transform the opening of a dry PowerPoint into a funny, personal story about his passion for the topic. I’ve taught non-profits to ditch the elevator speech and tell deeply personal stories about how their work affects and inspires them. Stories help us be our authentic selves, and engage people in a way that is powerful.
Maya Angelou once said, “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”
Good stories, well told, will make your message unforgettable, and that’s what I want to teach legal communicators.
What are you hoping attendees will learn from your presentation?
I’m convinced that storytelling is an under-utilized and often misunderstood skill that could and should be part of every legal marketer’s communications and content strategy. I hope my presentation will show attendees why and how they should incorporate storytelling into the very fiber of what they do.
What do you think is the key for success as a legal marketer today?
I think with all of the content and marketing messages bombarding people from all sides, standing out by being authentic, vulnerable and human will give any legal marketer the edge. Good storytelling is a great way to help marketers succeed.
What other session are you most interested in attending while at the conference, and why?
The keynote: We can all be movement starters. I love inspirational speakers because they focus on the big picture and help me enlarge my worldview. I want to be a movement starter, too!
What are you most looking forward to about the 2019 LMA Annual Conference?
Meeting new people, making new friends and colleagues and taking something back with me in my business life that will help me be better at what I do.
