LMA West Local Groups: Q3 Wrap-Ups

Local groups throughout the West spent the summer continuing their education and networking at a variety of different events and seminars.

LMA Bay Area

Bay Area

The LMA Bay Area had a very active summer full of programs, workshops and socials! The “can’t-miss” event of the summer every year is the Summer Social, and this year was a huge success! We had lots of new faces, old friends and amazing legal marketers join up at Le Colonial for an evening of incredible food, unique drinks and awesome networking. On August 9, LMA Bay Area held its monthly program about how to be effective on a team that is distributed across different offices and geographies. Our wonderful panelists, Beverly McManus of Covington & Burling, Monica Kuniyoshi of Gunderson Dettmer and Nick Latham of RainBDM, provided excellent insights to a packed live audience, and (in a bit of meta-commentary) practiced what they preached to two simulcast audiences in Sacramento and Palo Alto. On August 21, Clare Ota and Traci Stuart gave a very useful hands-on workshop about preparing submissions for rankings at popular places like Chambers & Partners. That very evening, the quarterly meeting of the lead marketer’s roundtable took place in Oakland, followed by a social mixer in the East Bay – part of a networking series that is rapidly growing in popularity!

LMA Los Angeles

Los Angeles

LMA Los Angeles was honored to host Harte Logan of CultureSync to discuss tribal leadership, a topic encompassing identifying corporate culture and organizational behavior. "Tribes" consist of groups of 20-120 people that are naturally connected. One way to think about a tribe member is if you passed him or her on the street you'd say "hello." This program specified five tribal "stages" influenced by and reinforcing the culture found within these groups.

As a takeaway, to be successful, tribal leaders must learn the language of all of these stages and work to move themselves and a core group of others around them toward Stage 4 or even 5. There is not a one-size-fits-all approach because employees within an organization are often at different stages and have different goals and desires to be met. The key for the tribal leader is changing their language and actions toward a more values-oriented, team-oriented mindset.

CMO Panel/Summer Social: LMA Los Angeles was honored to host a CMO Panel and Summer Social at The Standard Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. The panel featured Kathleen Flynn of Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner LLP, Trish Lilley of Stroock & Stroock & Lavan LLP, Vickie Spang of Sheppard Mullin Richter & Hampton LLP. Jennifer Mir, Practice Development Director at Munger, Tolles & Olson LLP and LMA West Region President, served as moderator. The panel touched on points surrounding management of large teams and major organizational changes, lawyer expectations and work-life balance – among others.

LMA Northwest

On July 17, Seattle LMANext hosted “Legal Pricing 101” with Chloe Carver, formerly of Perkins Coie’s pricing team. She shared fundamentals of pricing for legal services and how the pricing industry is enhancing the experience for our clients.

On August 1, LMANext Portland presented its first Lunch and Learn, "The First Five: Laying the Foundation for Future Leaders" with speakers, Kim Oakley (Foster Pepper) and Meghan Spradling (Miller Nash Graham & Dunn). Attendees learned how to effectively become an expert in their field, getting the most out of a mentorship and ways to build a strong professional network. Speakers highlighted the importance of becoming an expert in your line of work by knowing and understanding your firm, its culture and establishing a solid reputation for producing excellent work. Another key takeaway discussed methods to build your professional network with intention – through LMA, your firm or other civic and professional organizations – and how to maintain these connections.

Other summer events included Seattle hosting its summer social on July 24. This is a highlight of the year for many in LMA, and we welcomed new members and longtime members as well as colleagues from across LMA in town for Annual Conference planning meetings. Portland hosted their annual summer social on August 22 at Pips and Bounce, a great venue for catching up with old friends over a game of ping-pong and refreshments.

LMA Sacramento

The LMA Sacramento Local Group meets monthly for lunch program watch parties as well as

spring and fall networking mixers. The most recent watch party was Thursday, September 13 for the "Next Big Thing in Legal Marketing." Last spring the group met at Rio City Café to enjoy the views and libations and welcomed several new faces. The fall mixer is currently being planned for October – details coming soon.

LMA Southern California

Southern California

LMA SoCal had a bocce ball get together for last month’s summer social in Orange County and a meet-up in San Diego. Competition was fierce among local and regional committee members Gia Altreche, Jennifer Evans, Sheenika Gandhi, Helen Lo and Madison Minner! In July, they hosted an educational program that focused on “Moving From Art to Science: Incorporating Metrics to Drive Business Development and Marketing Priorities,” and featured change agent Timothy B. Corcoran who discussed how to use performance metrics to diagnose and improve win rates, to improve collaboration and cross-selling, to differentiate between marketing support and business development support, and to justify resource allocation decisions. Our Orange County members gathered at Crowell & Moring, and our San Diego members enjoyed the program via video livestream!

With a packed house at Payne & Fears LLP Orange County office, LMA SoCal members had a lively discussion on social media strategy, understanding the different platforms and best practices among law firms. Our San Diego members joined us via video conference at the Pillsbury San Diego office. Aly Crea from Berbay Marketing & PR facilitated, and we welcomed a new sponsor, Gavelytics!
