||This is a rare opportunity to hear from four leaders in the rankings world - David Burgess of Legal 500, Katrina Dewey of Law Dragon, Steve Naifeh of Best Lawyers and Rieta Ghosh of Chambers. (Rieta will be joining us via video conference.)
Ranking publications have been around since the 1980s, yet the frenzy for lawyers who want to be ranked is still a cause for avid competition. Hear from the leaders of these companies about
- How they are modifying the way they do business
- How they are planning for the future.
- The trends on law firm submissions – what they see in terms of best and worst practices
David Burgess is Publishing Director of The Legal 500, responsible for all editorial and rankings across over 120 jurisdictions. David oversees the strategic direction of The Legal 500, and has been instrumental in creating and launching the new initiatives from The Legal 500 over the past five years, including: the GC Powerlist Series, which recognizes the most influential in-house lawyers in the world; Client Intelligence Report, the world’s largest in-house survey; Who Represents Who, a searchable database of over 800,000 law firm/client relationships; and GC Magazine, which is distributed to 200,000 in-house lawyers. Over the past few years, David has travelled extensively across the Americas, Asia Pacific and Europe speaking at conferences, providing bespoke training sessions for law firms and most importantly, speaking to GCs to ensure that The Legal 500 is providing the information that they need to help them run their departments.
Katrina Dewey is Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Lawdragon, a legal media company that since 2005 has been providing free, high-quality legal news to an infinite audience of people interested in the law. Katrina began her career as a lawyer and became a leading advocate for greater transparency and openness in the law, which has been the defining goal of her 30 years in law and journalism. Katrina started as a cub reporter at the Los Angeles Daily Journal, working her way up to Editor after establishing some of the first editorial ‘best of’ lawyer lists, including Rainmakers, 40 Under 40 and the Top 100. She transformed the traditional trade paper from a publisher of court decisions to a vibrant, award-winning newspaper with 100 reporters, editors and photographers, breaking stories on everything from abuse claims against the Catholic church, failed oversight of child welfare authorities and indictments of lawyers for fraud and other misdeeds.
Steven Naifeh studied art history at Princeton and Harvard Universities, focusing on 19th and 20th century Western European and American art, of which he has written extensively. In addition to starting Best Lawyers and Best Doctors, he also began the U.S. News and World Report’s Best Lawyers collaboration. He is also an artist and author, and his biography of the great American painter, Jackson Pollock: An American Saga (with Gregory White Smith), won the Pulitzer Prize. His most recent work, Van Gogh: The Life (also with Smith), was praised as “definitive” by the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam and named “Art Book of the Year” by The Times of London.
Rieta Ghosh joined Chambers in 2000 and has served as Editor of many of its flagship ranking guides including Chambers Global, Chambers USA and Chambers UK. She developed and launched the inaugural editions of Chambers USA and Chambers Asia-Pacific and has overseen the growth of the research team’s broad geographic coverage. Since January 2009 she has held the position of Editor-in-Chief managing a team of 170 researchers and editors. Rieta has been responsible for the development of the ‘Unpublished’ reporting service and the Global Practice Guides series. She has also overseen Chambers recent expansion into industry sector professional services rankings, with the launch of Chambers HNW in Summer 2016. She was also former client information manager with a European market research agency and previously worked at a leading business advisory company. She is a graduate in ancient history of Durham University in Northeast England.
Deborah Farone is Director of Business Development and Communications at Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP. She is a past president of Metro NY LMA and was awarded the inaugural Legacy Award for her contribution to the profession. In addition, she has served as an adjunct faculty at New York University.
We hope you can join us!
