The 2016 LMA-Leadership Development Certificate Program (LMA-LDC) was held November 15-16 in Chicago, Illinois.

Join LMA and Lead Star™ for the inaugural leadership development experience for the legal marketing industry. The program incorporates current research with experiential activities, providing legal marketing professionals with a unique perspective on their personal leadership style and tendencies.

Pre-Event Program

Participants will receive select articles that present diverse perspectives on leadership, which will offer context and help them understand where their leadership can be applied. Legal marketing professionals have a strong tendency to equate leadership with positional authority. Pre-event readings will be selected to expand participants’ viewpoint on leadership as a set of behaviors that are relevant to all aspects of their success.

In addition to the pre-reading, participants will complete an online DiSC leadership assessment designed to help them build awareness around their leadership style.

DAY 1: Reimagining Leadership & Being a Trusted advisor

8:00 am - 5:00 pm

Reimagining Leadership

The course will begin by introducing the science and theory behind leadership development. Participants will examine compelling research and data as they explore:

  • Whether leaders are born or made
  • A working definition of the term “leader”
  • Methods in which individuals develop their leadership skills

After exploring a leader’s mindset, participants will learn how the ability to lead others begins with the discipline of understanding personal leadership strengths and seeking insight into blind spots and self-defeating behaviors. A focus on self-awareness will include:

  • Understanding how personal behavior choices impact others
  • Valuing authenticity in the context of self-management
  • Introduction of the DiSC Leadership Model, which helps participants understand different leadership styles and how to manage conflict among these styles
  • Exploration of each individual’s leadership style through review of personal DiSC assessment results

Being a Trusted Advisor

Participants will learn how to develop influence through exploration of these key leadership fundamentals:

  • How credibility is developed
  • How to build, express and manage confidence
  • The value and pathway for elevated, critical thinking
  • The impact of service-based leadership
  • Best practices for coaching, advising and delivering effective feedback
  • Key aspects of motivating effective collaboration

DAY 2: UNDERSTANDING AND OVERCOMING LEADERSHIP CHALLENGES & COMMITMENT TO ACTION

8:00 am - 3:00 pm

The second day of the workshop builds on the first day’s learnings around leading self and influencing others. Noted barriers to effective leadership for legal marketing professionals are explored as participants work towards creating an action plan for how they will implement leadership best practices in their current roles.

Understanding and Overcoming Leadership Challenges

Legal marketing professionals fill uniquely dynamic roles where they must lead themselves, lead others in teams and provide leadership influence to the organizations they are a part of. These multi-dimensional roles are ripe with
challenge. The participants will share perspectives on day-to-day challenges they experience as the cohort works together to apply leadership solutions to common barriers faced. Learning topics will include:

  • Leading change by understanding why resistance to change happens and how to progress through it
  • How accountability builds trust and contributes to results-oriented teams
  • Why staying resilient matters and how stress management, time management, and energy management impact a leader’s ability to influence outcomes and inspire others
  • The value of healthy conflict and how to leverage it for results

Commitment to Action

As the learning experience concludes, participants will focus on three core factors as they develop a Personal Action Plan for their next level of leadership success:

  • Values
  • Vision
  • Strategy

The workshop will conclude with participants drafting a Personal Action Plan for implementing leadership best practices. Participants will outline specific steps to integrate new leadership behaviors, while eliminating self-defeating behaviors. This action plan will also set the direction for their custom coaching sessions.

POST-EVENT PROGRAM: COACHING SESSIONS AND VIRTUAL CONTENT

Coaching Sessions

Participants will be provided two personal leadership coaching sessions post workshop. These sessions will target implementation of leadership lessons learned during the program to the specific roles and responsibilities each participant fills.

Virtual Content

As part of a leadership learning program, access to companion materials and resources will be made available to all program participants via Lead Star’s Spark online learning platform. Spark provides just in time learning and concept reinforcement utilizing social media and gamification best practices. Virtual content includes videos, articles, idea engagement, and shared expertise for resolving the common leadership challenges faced by program participants.


Meet Your Leadership Facilitators

Courtney Lynch, Founding Partner of Lead StarTM and LMA-LDC Instructor

Courtney LynchCourtney has found success by living her life as a leader.  Notable achievements include her nine years of service as a Marine Corps officer, managing a top-notch sales team for Rational Software, earning her law degree at William & Mary, practicing at one of the nation’s leading law firms, and creating Lead Star (www.leadstar.us)-- a premier leadership development consulting firm that works globally with leading organizations.  She also serves as the Director of the Center for Creative Leadership’s Partner Network.

Beyond Courtney’s government and corporate accomplishments, she is a business owner, and best-selling author of Leading from the Front.  Management guru Tom Peters calls her book one of the “best leadership books published in the past several years.”  Her success has been recognized throughout her professional career, but most recently she was awarded the National Stevie Award for Best Female Entrepreneur and BusinessWeek profiled her achievements as a leadership expert.  A dynamic guest on CNBC, FOX News, and CNN, Courtney’s efforts with Lead Star have been noted in publications ranging from Fast Company, and Inc., to The New York Times.

Sean Lynch, Senior Consultant

More than the motto of Sean’s alma mater, Yale University, these words also represent Sean’s ability to understand the cultural nuances of client organizations and creatively design impactful and engaging leadership development solutions.

Sean’s early leadership accomplishments occurred post-Yale, as a United States Air Force F-16 fighter pilot. After completing military service, Sean applied his leadership experience to the airline industry as a commercial pilot. Ultimately, his passion for leadership development inspired him to join Lead Star.

Whether facilitating a team session, giving a keynote address, or conducting a workshop, Sean delivers actionable, practical, and engaging content. Sean works with CEOs, executive teams, and frontline managers to help clients achieve exceptional results and lasting change.

Mark Beese

Mark is President of Leadership for Lawyers, LLC, a consultancy focused on helping lawyers become better leaders and business developers. He provides training, coaching and consultation to firms in the areas of leadership development, business development and marketing with law firms across North America. His clients range from small, single office firms to global Amlaw 100 firms.

He is a Fellow of the College of Law Practice Management.  In 2014 he was inducted into the Legal Marketing Association Hall of Fame, one of only 22 leaders to have received this honor.

He is currently Chair of the Lawyer Leadership of the American Bar Association, Law Practice Management Division.  He is also a professional member of the International Leadership Association, the National Speakers Association, the Legal Marketing               Association and the College of Law Practice Management.

Mark has more than 25 years experience as a chief marketing officer for professional services firms. He has served as Chief Marketing Officer for Holland & Hart, a 450-attorney law firm based in Denver, Director of Marketing for the New York law firm of Hodgson Russ and Director of Marketing for Kideney Architects in Buffalo, NY.

Lisa Simon

simon_lisa.jpgLisa Simon is Chief Client Development Officer at Lathrop & Gage. In this role, she provides strategic direction on the firm’s national business development and marketing initiatives and leads a team responsible for client service, market growth, PR and communications, branding, and community and civic engagement. 

A twenty-year legal marketing veteran and proven leader in the industry, Lisa is a frequent speaker on client feedback, alternative fee arrangements, talent acquisition, and  marketing communications. Lisa was president of the Legal Marketing Association in 2008 and has held numerous leadership positions within LMA. She is passionate about educating and mentoring those who are new to the industry and has been very involved with LMA’s QuickStart programs for many years.

Her civic and community engagement includes serving as a board member of organizations such as The Denver Hospice and Parkinson’s Association of the Rockies.
