Wyrick Robbins Yates & Ponton LLP, a Raleigh entrepreneurial law firm with 64 lawyers, seeks a Director of Business Development to identify and support new business development opportunities, to enhance client relationships and cross-selling efforts, and to coordinate the development and implementation of business development plans that are in line with the firm’s strategic business plan, including targeting specific client sectors or market segments. The Director will also coordinate the firm’s marketing efforts in support of the business development effort. The Director will be a key player in focusing a highly successful law firm in its transition to an even more highly client-centered institutional enterprise.

 

Reports To:  Managing Partner and Chairperson of the Business Development Task Force

 

Responsibilities include:

Business Development

  • Identify business development opportunities and drive implementation from defining the strategy to packaging the response.
  • Initiate and maintain contact with potential new clients, subject to applicable Bar requirements.
  • Work closely with lawyers/practice groups to identify business development opportunities, develop appropriate strategies, and develop and implement practice group and individual plans in line with firm strategy. 
  • Act as a business development coach to lawyers, providing support, training and techniques targeted to achievement of their buiness developmet goals.  Develop and implement appropriate business development skills training throughout the firm.
  • Evaluate, monitor and track existing business development plans/efforts on an ongoing basis to ensure deadlines are met and commitments kept.
  • Champion new business development initiatives and assist individuals, client teams and practice groups in their implementation.
  • Work with lawyers/practice groups with new business proposals, request for proposals, etc.
  • Manage the proposal process, including drafting and assembling proposals, pitches and other presentation materials tailored to meet the needs and interests of the target; tracking results; and maintaining a proposal database. 
  • Ensure that follow up is conducted to determine why a presentation was or was not successful. 
  • Recommend and oversee internal and external market research to gather information on the market, clients and prospective clients, competition, opportunities or trends, to obtain other market intelligence as needed and keep practice groups informed.
  • Develop and maintain relationships within business community, facilitating introductions between lawyers and key association groups/contacts. 
  • Identify and assess potential conferences, trade shows, seminars, forums, sponsorships, speaking engagements and article placement opportunities to ensure they are in line with practice group goals.  Ensure appropriate firm participation.
  • Plan, supervise and participate in both internal and external events on behalf of the firm, such as trade shows, special events, conferences, seminars, etc.
  • Under the supervision of the Executive Committee, analyze the firm’s client base and work with lawyers to develop strategies to increase cross-selling and expand high-value client relationships.
  • Develop and implement a client feedback program.
  • Assist in the development of a team approach to client development, cross-selling and client service.
  • Develop and monitor the business development budget and prioritize and allocate resources in a manner that will result in a significant return on investment.

Marketing Coordination

  • Coordinate internal and external resources for development of marketing strategies that support the firm’s business development plans and strategic goals.
  • Oversee firm’s electronic marketing efforts including supervision of website design and maintenance with the support of Information Technology Committee.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of firm collateral and marketing communications, such as firm announcements, holiday cards, brochures, practice group descriptions, newsletters, client mailings, lawyer bios, client map, directory listings, advertisements, client and prospect mailings, new client welcome materials, etc.
  • Coordinate process for internal communications about successes and opportunities. 
  • Coordinate the firm’s ongoing media strategy for press coverage and lawyer article placement.
  • Coordinate the firm’s advertising strategy, working with outside creative resources as necessary.
  • Coordinate preparation of the firm’s annual marketing budget, as well as client entertainment budgets.

General/Other

  • Attend firm meetings as needed, including those of the Executive Committee, partners, associates, practice groups, etc.
  • Regularly report to the Executive Committee and the Managing Partner on the activities and accomplishments of the Director of Business Development.
  • Establish good working relationships and professional rapport with firm lawyers and staff.
  • Attend seminars and participate in professional organizations to foster professional growth.
  • Represent the firm, as appropriate, in organizations such as the Legal Marketing Association.

  • Experience with law firms that have recruited and integrated lateral lawyers/practices.
