Wiggin and Dana, a 150-attorney, five-office law firm headquartered in New Haven, CT is seeking a Director of Marketing and Business Development. The Director will help the firm achieve its strategic vision, goals and growth strategy.

Responsibilities: 

  • Working with departments, practice groups and individual lawyers to develop long-term and short-term marketing plans, including budgets; following up to assess progress and hold the groups and individuals accountable
  • Being directly involved in high-level pitches and RFP’s, including assisting with key decisions (e.g., go or no go, strategy, positioning, etc.) and other related issues (e.g., pricing considerations) as well as sheparding the proposal through the firm, engaging attorneys and staff as appropriate, and tracking and measuring success
  • Assisting in identifying appropriate clients for more formalized client teams; working with the information center to gather and organize information related to the clients; meeting with the teams to identify members and opportunities; assisting the team(s) in developing action plans; following up to ensure implementation; measuring success
  • Assisting the firm in assessing growth opportunities by identifying trends and opportunities and making recommendations for capitalizing on them (e.g., practices, niches, offices, clients, etc.)
  • Critically assessing marketing opportunities and budget requests, such as charitable contributions, sponsorships, tickets and events, and making recommendations to the firm regarding efficacy; overseeing and ensuring effective implementation of the opportunities, supervising the Client and Firm Events Coordinator
  • Developing a strategy for and making recommendations about firm participation in directories, surveys and listings (e.g., Chambers and Partners, Best Lawyers, Martindale-Hubbell, etc.), and working with the Business Development Manager/Writer to implement the strategy
  • Working with ethics counsel to ensure that materials comply with advertising rules
  • Coordinating with outside vendors, including the firm’s PR consultant and graphic designer
  • Overseeing and being involved in major marketing projects (e.g., Web site)
  • Managing the marketing and business development budget
  • Ensuring the marketing department’s visibility and support in all firm offices
  • Managing the Marketing and Business Development department

Reports to:      

Chair of the Executive Committee for strategic direction, and General Counsel for project management and day-to-day administrative matters.

Specific requirements

  • Law firm marketing experience
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Self-starter who is proactive and relentless in follow-up
  • Possess proven solid judgment
