Business Development Excels through Creative Program

In an effort to drive revenue and help change the firm’s culture to one more focused on business development and client service, Foley Hoag developed CONNECT NOW. “An integrated business development program combining one-on-one internal coaching with outside consultants, peer-to-peer learning groups and tactical individual business plans,” this program was designed for partners -- just 15 at a time -- already making progress in the area of business development.

The program was thoughtfully crafted. Research included creating a specifications document detailing all aspects of the program, vetting it with the partners, and settling issues of compensation and time credit. The program launched after participants signed onto a timeline of activities that included personalized coaching sessions, training, and bi-weekly peer group luncheons. Participants created their own action plans as a working  “punch list” to track progress.

Three aspects set CONNECT NOW apart from other business development programs: its basis in the firm’s strategic plan, the accountability and measurements built in, and the flexibility afforded each participant to set individual goals and choose the business development vehicle that works best for him or her.

Early results are impressive. Just half way through the 18-month time allotment, 30% of the participants have exceeded their goals for the entire program, and the others “are on track to meet or exceed their goals by the ending date. As a result an additional $7.5 million will be added to the firm’s bottom line, a conservative estimate,” according to the firm. Your Honor judges commend this exceptional program with a first-place award in the category of Business Development.
