Ethics in Legal Marketing

Nichole McLaughlin, Assistant Ethics Counsel and Deputy Counsel to the North Carolina State Bar, will discuss the requirements of the Rules of Professional Conduct and ethics opinions relative to lawyer advertising and solicitation. She will go over prohibition on false and misleading communications, permissible forms of advertising including print, web sites, radio/TV, and more.

Nichole P. McLaughlin Deputy Counsel

Nichole P. McLaughlin has been employed as a staff attorney with the North Carolina State Bar since June 2004.  Originally from New Jersey, she graduated from Drew University with a B.A. in English in 1993.  She obtained her J.D. from Seton Hall University School of Law in 1996.  As Deputy Counsel, she is responsible for investigating grievances filed against North Carolina attorneys and based on that investigation prepares and submits a report to the Grievance Committee along with a recommendation for resolution of the matter.  As Assistant Ethics Counsel, she gives informal ethics advice to lawyers about their own future conduct either via telephone or email.  Prior to joining the Bar, she was in private practice for five years with Donaldson & Black, P.A. in Greensboro and handled asbestos workers’ comp cases.
